Day 28: The Descent of the Holy Spirit
The Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary
Acts 2:1–11
At the Annunciation, “the Holy Spirit had descended … overshadowing” the Blessed Virgin Mary, bringing about the Incarnation.
It was in that moment, as St. John Paul II teaches, that Mary experienced the first descent of the Spirit in a uniquely profound way—effectively becoming the first member of the Christian Church.
Where was Mary during Pentecost?
Sacred Scripture tells us that Mary was present in the Upper Room with the Apostles as they awaited the promised Spirit. St. Luke writes in the Acts of the Apostles that they all continued:
“to devote themselves with one accord to prayer, together with Mary the mother of Jesus” (Acts 1:14).
This means that Mary was there at Pentecost, gathered in prayer with the Apostles, ready to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit once again but this time as Mother of the Church.
